Freedom of Colours III (2021) continues Green’s Freedom of Colours series, first introduced in New York in 2017. The work examines autonomy and self-definition within cultural and psychological constraint, using colour as both structural force and symbolic language.
Executed as a triple scene painting, the composition reveals distinct visual layers under natural light, ultraviolet illumination and in darkness. These shifting conditions destabilise fixed perception, reinforcing the fluid and constructed nature of identity.
Balancing abstraction and figuration, expansive chromatic fields suggest openness and possibility, while figurative elements ground the work in lived human experience. Freedom is not presented as a fixed ideal, but as a process, negotiated, reclaimed and continually redefined. Through layered surface construction and phosphorescent elements, the painting embodies this tension between containment and release.
