Painting Description

Anthropocene (2022) emerges from Green’s Limitless series, developed following her 2020 residency at Château d’Orquevaux in France. During this period, Green began exploring themes of space, scale and isolation, using cosmic imagery as a lens through which to reflect on the human condition.

Executed as a triple scene painting, the work reveals distinct visual layers under natural light, ultraviolet illumination and in darkness. These shifting conditions destabilise fixed perception, reinforcing Green’s interest in the layered nature of identity and experience.

The composition presents a solitary child seated upon the earth, holding a teddy bear while gazing into a vast field of stars. The recurring motifs of the moon, earth and cosmic space create a quiet atmosphere of contemplation. A small white flag bearing the words Be Kind introduces a fragile gesture of reflection.

Created in the context of the global pandemic, the painting reflects a moment of collective pause. The immense scale of the universe becomes a reminder of human vulnerability, while the child figure evokes both innocence and responsibility. Anthropocene was exhibited in Space is the Place at Mudac, Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts, Lausanne, in 2023.
