Brighten Dark Places
Solo Exhibition - Spazio 996/A, Venice, Italy
7 December 2023 - 10 April 2024
Brighten Dark Spaces presents a series of four large-scale works that explore the relationship between perception, fear, and transformation. Through her signature use of layered painting combined with fluorescent and phosphorescent materials, Veronica Green constructs images that shift between visibility and obscurity, activating in response to changing light conditions. This body of work follows Green’s presentations at the Venice Biennale and precedes her solo exhibition Small Acts of Kindness at Palazzo delle Prigioni.
Across the exhibition, the works move between states of illumination and darkness, creating a tension between what is seen and what remains concealed. In natural light, the surfaces appear calm and resolved; under ultraviolet light and in darkness, hidden elements emerge, altering the visual and emotional register of each piece. This oscillation destabilises fixed perception, inviting a slower, more attentive mode of viewing.
Rather than depicting fear directly, the works operate through atmosphere and spatial ambiguity. The viewer is positioned within an environment where clarity is continually deferred, and meaning unfolds over time. In this way, Brighten Dark Spaces becomes less a narrative of confrontation and more an examination of how perception itself is shaped by uncertainty.
Through this shifting visual language, Green proposes a quiet transformation, one that emerges not through resolution, but through sustained attention to what lies just beyond visibility.
