10 Minute Windows
Biennale Spaces, Venice, Italy
19 April - 5 June 2022
Presented during the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, 10 Minute Windows introduced Veronica Green’s triple-scene painting technique within an immersive installation structured around cycles of light and darkness.
The exhibition takes its title from the rhythm of Venetian life, where residents adjust the light entering their homes through veneziane shutters. Echoing this daily gesture, the exhibition space alternated between illuminated and darkened conditions every ten minutes, transforming the way the paintings were perceived.
Across five large works, Green explored the relationship between time, perception and environment. Each painting was constructed using layers of paint, fluorescent pigments and phosphorescent materials that revealed different visual states depending on the conditions of light. In natural light, the surface appeared as a quiet painted landscape. Under ultraviolet illumination, hidden elements emerged, activating a second image. When the room fell into darkness, the phosphorescent pigments continued to glow, revealing a third scene that lingered in the absence of light.
The shifting atmosphere of the exhibition encouraged viewers to slow their pace and remain with the work as it gradually unfolded. Through this cyclical transformation, 10 Minute Windows became both a spatial experience and a meditation on perception, where seeing required patience, and meaning emerged through time.
